The Model 3363 resonant-modulator driver is a user-friendly single-frequency RF driver for operation with our electro-optic modulators (EOMs). It consists of a single-frequency source and RF power ampli?er in a compact package and is ideal for use with New Focus™ EOMs operating from 50 kHz to 2.0 GHz. (It can also be used with our broadband EOMs, but results in lower modulation depth).

The standard product (Model 3363-A) incorporates an adjustable VCO-based (voltage-controlled-oscillator) frequency source available from 25 MHz to 1 GHz. The VCO source can be tuned over a limited range (typically ±5% of center frequency) via a convenient front-panel knob. In addition, the VCO frequency can be set to track the resonance peak of the EOM through a toggle switch located on the front panel.

A high-stability synthesized single-frequency source (Models 3363-B and 3363-C) in place of the VCO is also available from 50 kHz to 2 GHz. The synthesized source is stabilized to a crystal oscillator for excellent long- and short-term stability. The output frequency is selected to match your EOM at time of shipment. If needed, you can also adjust the frequency over a limited range through the use of an external computer port.

Each Model 3363 allows you to operate either using the internal frequency source, or you can supply your own frequency reference from an external oscillator.

For your convenience, the Model 3363 includes a front-panel-adjustable modulation depth ranging from zero to beyond three radians. The Model 3363-A has a manual frequency-adjust knob and an option switch for the

VCO frequency to follow the modulator’s resonant frequency. The RF ampli?er provides approximately 30 dBm of power, enough to drive any of our resonant EOMs to achieve

three radians of phase modulation.

A re?ected RF power monitor provides a DC signal proportional to the re?ected RF voltage. For the VCO-based Model 3363-A, this feature allows you to manually tune the frequency of the driver to match the resonant frequency of the modulator for maximum modulation ef?ciency or to monitor the frequency-locking circuit. For our ?xed-frequency synthesizer options, Models 3363-B and 3363-C, this feature can be used to ?ne-tune the resonance of our high-frequency EOMs using the integral tuning slug of

the modulator.

Other features include an RF-output enable switch to eliminate damage to the ampli?er and/or EOM while connecting and disconnecting the output, an analog AM modulation input, a digital TTL enable input, and a TTL output disable. The Model 3363 is low noise and runs off line power. The Model 3363 ships with a 4-foot cable to connect to your modulator so you can get up and running quickly.
