Measure force and displacement for various materials as they are stretched, compressed, sheared, or bent. The Materials Testing System (ME-8230) includes everything you need to get your students started with investigating material properties such as Young's Modulus, tensile strength, yield strength, percent elongation, and modulus of toughness. Additional accessories and adapters are available for flat materials tension, column buckling, bending, and shear testing.
Young's Modulus for Various Materials
Flat Coupon Fixture
Test any flat material, such as paper, foil, or a flat brass coupon (shown) from the Metal Flat Test Coupon Set (AP-8223).
Force and position data are recorded as the sample is stretched using the hand crank.
Structures Beam Fixture
Investigate the properties of plastic and cast plaster I-beams (with or without rebar) when testing column buckling.
Simulate rebar in concrete columns using the Structures Cast Beam Set (ME-7009).
Use a webcam to record live video simultaneously with data using PASCO Capstone software.
Bending Accessory
Perform three-point bending tests of various materials with these loading and support anvils.
Bending test being performed on brass sample (ME-8240).
Photoelasticity Accessory
See stress lines by placing a clear, photoelastic beam between two polarizing sheets (ME-8241) and illuminating from behind.
The Photoelasticity Accessory includes a set of clear beams that is a part of the Photoelastic I-Beam Set (ME-7011). This set can be used to build bridges with the PASCO Structures System.
Shear Accessory and Samples
Perform shear test for a variety of wires with four different diameters: 1/16", 3/32", 1/8," and 5/32". Shear samples (ME-8240) include 1/8" diameter aluminum, brass and mild steel.
Shear test being performed on brass sample (ME-8240).
Performing shear tests on steel, brass and aluminum samples using PASCO Capstone software.
