Silicon photonics is an interesting area of research since it offers the scalability of CMOS fabrication technology with the potential of infrared waveguide circuits for sensing and biomedical applications. In this paper by researchers at Ghent University and the University of Southampton, silicon-on-insulator spectrometers were demonstrated at 3.8 microns. These devices demonstrated low insertion loss and good crosstalk characteristics, leading to the possibility of spectroscopic sensor or multiplexer systems.
